There are a number of services and events happening across the Diocese of Newcastle during Lent and Easter.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday Sung Eucharist at Newcastle Cathedral | Sunday 24 March 10am
We will start our Sung Eucharist with a procession into the building by the Cathedral Choir which you are very welcome to join.

Palm Sunday Stations of the Cross at St. Gabriel's Heaton | Sunday 24 March 5.30pm
The Stations of the Cross commemorate Jesus's passion and death on the cross. There are 14 stations that each depict a moment on his journey which are marked with a reading or a prayer

Meet outside Coronation Cottages (unless it's very wet) for our Procession of Palms, leading into Sunday Eucharist. 

Palm Sunday Service at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Sunday 24 March 9.30am
Come and join us at our Palm Sunday service as we remember Jesus' journey into Jerusalem. We will begin with a procession and during the service listen to a dramatised version of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All members of the congregation will received a palm cross after the service.

Special Service of Holy Communion for Palm Sunday with a dramatised reading of the Passion Narrative and distribution of Palm Crosses.

Palm Sunday Eucharist at St. Peter's Monkseaton | Sunday 24 March 10am
We begin the journey of Holy Week with the Palm Sunday procession, and hear the Passion Gospel.The service begins in the church hall with the reading of the Palm Sunday gospel and blessing of palms.

Holy Communion with Dramatic retelling of the Passion and distribution of Palms

Palm Sunday Parish Communion at St. Cuthbert's Blyth | Sunday 24 March 9.30am
Meet in Church Hall wwith hymns led by our Music Group, hear the Palm Gospel, followed by a short palm procession around our church grounds into church to start our main service. We hear a dramatised version of the Palm Sunday Gospel, and continue our service with our usual Eucharist.

Join us for Palm Sunday when we celebrate Jesus's entry into Jerusalem. We start at 9.45 am with a short procession carrying Pal Branches into St. Paul's Church.

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday Chrism Eucharist at Newcastle Cathedral | Thursday 28 March 11am 
Come together with the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, the Bishop of Newcastle, alongside the clergy and lay ministers of Newcastle Diocese for the yearly observance of ministry and the reaffirmation of commitment. Experience the blessing of oils on this Maundy Thursday, marking a special moment of spiritual renewal and dedication.

The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday at Newcastle Cathedral | Thursday 28 March 7pm
The ‘Liturgy of the Last Supper’ on Maundy Thursday will offer a poignant opportunity to commemorate the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his crucifixion. The preacher at this service will be The Revd Shemil Mathew, Vice Dean at Emmanuel Theological College.

Sung Eucharist of the Last Supper, followed by a silent Watch in the Garden of Gethsemane until 9.00pm
church will close at 9.10pm. You may leave after the service before the Watch begins.

Maundy Thursday Liturgy of the Last Supper with Foot Washing and Watch at St. George's Jesmond | Thursday 28 March 7.30pm
Travel with us through the last few hours before Jesus' betrayal and arrest, as we recall the Last Supper, and Jesus washing his disciples' feet, as a lesson in how his followers should serve one another with humility and love. Then, after the service, join us, if you wish, to "watch and pray" in the church as the day of His crucifixion approaches.

Maunday Thursday Eucharist at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Thursday 28 March 7.30pm
A celebration of Jesus' final meal with his disciples. The service will be a Eucharist with foot-washing and will be followed by the stripping of the altars. Those who wish to stay are invited to a time of silent prayer from c.8.30-10pm as we watch with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Maundy Thursday Eucharist of the Lord's Supper (with Vigil) at Holy Nativity Chapel House | Thursday 28 March 7pm
Celebrating the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, this service includes the Washing of Feet (of volunteers) and is followed by a short vigil by the Blessed Sacraments.

A service marking the institution of the Eucharist, followed by the stripping of the sanctuary and watch

Maundy Thursday Taizé service at St. Michael & All Angels Newburn | Thursday 28 March 7pm

Maundy Thursday Liturgy of the Last Supper followed by Watch of the Passion at St. Peter's Monkseaton | Thursday 28 March 7.30pm 
We remember the night before Jesus died, and his new commandment to love one another. We strip the sanctuary bare, and watch in a silent and empty church, recalling Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Maundy Thursday Eucharist and Stripping of Altar at St. Cuthbert's Blyth | Thursday 28 March 7pm
A Sung Eucharist remembering the Last Supper, followed by Stripping of Altar and ornaments from our Church sanctuary and chancel. Followed by a short watch until approximately 8.30 p.m. when the church will be locked until Good Friday.

Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service and stripping of Altar at St. James, Riding Mill | Thursday 28 March 7pm
Tenebrae is a quiet prelude to Easter Day which helps us identify with the darkness and loss felt by Jesus’ followers as they experienced his death.Following each reading a moment of quiet reflection will be held after which a candle will be extinguished and we will share in a response.

Good Friday

'Messy Cathedral: The Easter Story' at Newcastle Cathedral | Friday 29 March 11am
This Good Friday, families are invited to join in with our ‘Messy Cathedral’, where children and their grown-ups can engage in craft activities and explore the Easter story. The session will feature stories, songs, and refreshments, providing a fun experience for participants of all ages. Drop in at any time; no pre-booking required. Recommended for 4-11-year-olds and their families. 

The Liturgy of Good Friday at Newcastle Cathedral | Friday 29 March 2pm
We invite you to gather with us on Good Friday for a moving service marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This service will be an opportunity to contemplate the sacrifice of Christ and the redemptive significance of the Cross. Our preacher will be The Revd Shemil Mathew, Vice Dean at Emmanuel Theological College.

'The Story of the Tree' on BBC Radio 4 | Friday 29 March 3pm
On Good Friday, 29 March, Bishop Helen-Ann will present BBC Radio 4’s Good Friday Meditation, featuring a segment about the Story Chair on display at the Cathedral and exploring the themes of pain, strength, and new life. Good Friday Act of Witness in Jesmond | Friday 29 March 10.15am
Acorn Road, Jesmond, Next to "The Boilerhouse" hairdressers., NE2 2DJ, United Kingdom.A short outdoor event, in central Jesmond, to which all are invited, where we retell the Easter story, and hand out hot cross buns to passers by. Come and sing, listen, and reach out in friendship to our neighbours on Good Friday.

This morning we welcome everyone to our family worship which will be very informal and aimed to engage children and families with craft, music, refreshments and a journey through the last week of Jesus' life.

As we fully immerse ourselves in the events of Good Friday, we come together in this sombre service spending time reflecting on the hour before Christ died upon the cross.

Easter Sunday

Festal Eucharist of Easter Day at Newcastle Cathedral | Sunday 31 March 10am
A joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Join the Cathedral Choir for a vibrant worship service filled with music, prayers, and a message of hope and renewal. The Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, will preside.

Festival Eucharist for Easter Morning at St. George's Jesmond | Sunday 31 March 9.30am
Come and celebrate the resurrection of Christ in this joyful service of Holy Communion - with the singing of well loved Easter hymns led by our wonderful choir - and the additional joyful tones of a brass ensemble accompaniment!! Stay around afterwards for the Easter Egg Hunt on the Green, and celebratory refreshments in the Church Hall afterwards!

Easter Sunday Parish Eucharist at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Sunday 31 March 9.30am
In this service we celebrate Easter Day and that Christ is Risen. There will be music, hymns, singing along with the sharing of communion. While more formal that our usual family services, this is still a lovely service for families, where there will be the chance to help decorate our cross with flowers, there will be crafts in the community room and an Easter egg hunt in church at the end of the service. A true service of celebration of Jesus' resurrection.
