Wylam community builds model village

Based on an idea that has come all the way from Slovenia, Wylam now has its very own model village with Joseph, Mary and Jesus at its centre.

The model, located at St Oswin’s Church, has been a good while in the making and has involved a number of people from the village including Wylam Scouts and Brownies.  Each week the modelers have met in the church hall to make clay figures, trees, houses, shops and more.  One of the things that the group are extremely proud of is the railway running over Points Bridge at the top of the model.

This is year one of a five-year project and the aim is for it to be a real community venture involving as many villagers as possible.  Whatever people have to bring to the model is valued.  The emphasis is on enjoyment and participation.

Sam McGeever, who instigated the project says, “Celebrating togetherness, community, family and friends, the Wylam village model brings past and present life to the Christmas story.

"The community Crib project was about the communal act of making together as it was about the final result.”

People can view Wylam’s Magical Christmas Village at St Oswin’s in Wylam from 18 December until 6 January from 11am until 3pm daily. Visitors should be prepared to be amazed.
