Students from Duke’s Secondary School in Ashington gathered to plant a tree earlier this month, gifted to them at STEM Fest Net Zero.
The students were joined by Kirsten Johnson of Northumberland County Council Forestry and Cllr Jim Lang of Ashington Town and Northumberland County Councils, who advised on how to plant the 18 mixed tree saplings.
STEM Fest Net Zero was a convention held last year, teaching students about careers in forestry, the importance of forests to our planet and how to plant a tree using a T-shaped hole.
Rebecca McCready, Science Teacher at Duke's Secondary School, said: "Our students are really keen to enhance the school habitat through this tree planting initiative, and get stuck in whatever the weather!
"The challenge that climate change presents to us is enormous and diverse, but we are showing that we can all play our part by doing small things which add up to have a huge impact. I am hopeful that this will lead to even more ambitious targets as students understand more about their impact on the Earth."
