Sea Sunday tradition continues to evolve at St John's

First published on: 23rd July 2024

Sea Sunday is a day for us all to focus on the people who work at sea – remembering those no longer with us and praying for the seafarers and fishermen of today.

St John’s Church at Spittal has a long-standing relationship with the Berwick lifeboat crew and traditionally, the church hosted a Songs of Praise type service.

Following the coronavirus pandemic, this changed and in July 2023, a new event was born with a fete in the church gardens, live music and a short outdoor service, as well as crafts, games and stalls including one from the RNLI.

This year (14 July), the weather was not so kind, with both the service and music moved indoors – but it was still a memorable day with a hugely popular indoor bouncy castle at the back of church - in the space usually used by the weekly group for mums, carers and toddlers, the youth and family focused clubs, and tea time church.

Some activities took place outdoors – all attractions were free and everyone was invited to make worthy donations to the RNLI.

This year’s event included the new element of a knitted seascape in front of the church, created as a joint community and church effort and will remain in place for the remainder of the summer.

People of all ages were fascinated by the display celebrating God’s creation and referencing local sites of the lighthouse and tour boat.

St John’s Church is part of the Benefice of Scremerston, Spittal and Tweedmouth. It is located on the main road through Spittal just by the bus stop.

The Berwick lifeboat crew’s boathouse is located a short walk away by the Tweed Estuary.
