Illuminated Sheep at Newcastle Cathedral: An Invitation to Participate

First published on: 11th July 2024

In October, Newcastle Cathedral will host the Illuminated Sheep artwork by artist Deepa Mann-Kler, previously showcased at Hexham Abbey and inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels.

The Cathedral will care for a non-illuminated sheep throughout September as part of an ‘adoption scheme’ organised by Queen’s Hall in Hexham.

The Cathedral would like to use the period before the installation goes live to showcase the work the Church is doing, particularly in our more rural communities.  One way you can do this is by ‘decorating’ the sheep for a one-week period and having a display about your ministry alongside it. The weeks available to develop a display around the sheep are:

  • Monday 2 September – Sunday 8 September
  • Monday 9 September – Sunday 15 September
  • Monday 16 September – Sunday 22 September

The Cathedral is also exploring having a small exhibition offering snapshots of the work of the Church across the Diocese during this time. They would love to hear from you if you would like to be part of either of these initiatives. If interested, please email Peter Cumiskey at peter.cumiskey@newcastlecathedral.org.uk, to arrange a conversation with the Dean.
