Building work reveals a glimpse into Byker’s exciting future

An exciting project to transform a church into a state-of-the-art youth and community hub is beginning to take shape.

Building work is rapidly progressing at St Michael’s Byker, as part of the ambitious £4.2m Lighthouse Project which got underway earlier this year.

The new centre will provide a safe and central meeting place in the heart of Byker where young people and the community can flourish, with access to a wide variety of community activities and services for around 1,500 young people and families each year, alongside a reimagined worship space at St Michael’s.

Diocesan representatives have been given a tour of the site, where they met Operations Director Ben Roman, architect Keith McClure and Area Dean, the Revd Phil Medley, who is chair of the St Michael’s Centre Partnership.

The project is being made possible with the award of a grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Youth Investment Fund, and through the generosity of the Lord Crew Trust and the Squire’s Foundation.

The full story will be published in a forthcoming edition of Link.
