Caretaker/Verger (Holy Trinity Jesmond)

Holy Trinity Jesmond is seeking a Caretaker/Verger to work a minumum of 14 hours/week with the opportunity to work more hours/week for the right candidate.

General

Holy Trinity, Jesmond is a welcoming, evangelical, Anglican Church with a diverse congregation that is both gathered and local. The role of Caretaker/Verger supports and enables use of our buildings for mission and ministry in collaboration with the staff team, church officers and volunteers.

The Caretaker/Verger is an auxiliary staff member, employed by the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and supervised by the Operations Manager on its behalf.

Personal Requirements

A hard-working, honest, dependable and self-motivated person is required to undertake the role of Caretaker/Verger at Holy Trinity Church. The successful candidate must be able to uphold the Christian ethos and support the aims and values of Holy Trinity Church in all aspects of its ministry and mission.

Role Description

The 14 hours/week Caretaker/Verger role consists of:

1. Ensuring buildings are set up and ready for regular week-day users and appropriately set up for special events and bookings, including weddings and funerals. This would include moving furniture and set up for Vintage (our seniors lunch club), Trinity Tots toddler group and on one Saturday morning half term for Messy Church. 

2. Ensuring buildings are ready for Sunday worship through liaison with staff and wardens and attending to any practical needs throughout morning worship. This would include furniture moving and setting up rooms in the hall for our work with children and young people. 

3. Undertaking some minor repairs and maintenance work as well as liaising with outside contractors.

Any additional duties and hours/per week would be the subject of discussion and agreement with the right candidate and could include ensuring that some or all our buildings are thoroughly cleaned each week.

Working Hours

The Caretaker/Verger is expected to work a minimum of 14 hours per week, to include up to 4 hours on a Sunday (9.30am – 1.30pm). The rest of the hours will be taken up with supporting staff and teams at various activities during the week (these hours are to be worked out in negotiation with staff and appropriate volunteers) and in cleaning and general maintenance. Extra hours may be available on an occasional basis as a result of additional bookings and services. It is recognised that the contracted hours are flexible due to the varying demands of the role.

Time Off

Full time paid holiday entitlement is 25 days per annum, plus 8 Public Holidays, including 2 at Christmas and 2 at Easter. Part time staff receive a pro rata amount of the standard, public and concessionary days.

Remuneration/Pension

The Caretaker/Verger is paid £12 per hour, depending on experience. Holy Trinity is a Real Living Wage Employer and the salary is reviewed on an annual basis.

Pension status: Holy Trinity PCC will comply with our pension duties in accordance with Part 1 of the Pensions Act 2008.

Probationary Period and Review

This role is subject to a 4-month probationary period.

Review

The role will be reviewed annually.

Genuine Occupational Requirement

This post does not have a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) that the appointee must be a committed Christian with a lifestyle consistent with the Christian faith. However, the successful applicant must be sympathetic to the Christian faith, willing to comply with the church’s values when dealing with the public and assist with various church-based tasks and events.
