Retired Clergy

Clergy retirement in the Diocese of Newcastle is a growth industry! We now have more than 200 as part of the diocesan family and we value the commitment and contribution made to our witness and service.

Retirement brings some freedom to choose about how and what and when, and that should properly be honoured.

If you wish to continue to exercise your ordained ministry, you should ask for the Bishops Permission to Officiate (known as PTO) and safeguarding documentation will need to be completed. Please contact the Bishop of Newcastle (at Bishops House, 29 Moor Rd South, Gosforth, Newcastle, NE3 1PA) and the appropriate Welcome documentation will be sent.

Pastoral care for retired clergy and family rests with the Bishop, your Incumbent and Area Dean. The Bishop has also appointed stewards for retired clergy in each deanery to assist her in offering this care. When you ask for a PTO, she will invite you to discuss the sort of contributions you would like to continue to make.

Retired clergy are encouraged to continue to make use of the Directors for Spirituality and Spiritual Direction and for Pastoral Care and Counselling. Grants are available for Continuing Ministerial Development for those active in ministry.

The Deanery Stewards organise some local social gatherings and each year there are occasional Study Days and Consultation Days for all retired clergy.

Leaflets with current information about Fees for Occasional Offices and Payment for Services for retired stipendiaries (other than in the parishes in which they habitually worship) can be downloaded from the Parish Fees page
