There are a number of services and events happening across the Diocese of Newcastle during Lent and Easter.

Palm Sunday

Liturgy of Palm Sunday at Newcastle Cathedral | Sunday 13 April 10am
This year, we will begin with the Liturgy of the Palms in St Nicholas Square. Please arrive in good time to collect a Palm Cross and join us outside for a prompt 10am start. The service will then continue inside the Cathedral.

Join us for a traditional procession of palms and Sung Eucharist service with distribution of palm crosses

Palm Sunday Service at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Sunday 13 April 9.30am
We will begin with a procession and during the service listen to a dramatised version of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. All member of the congregation will received a palm cross after the service.

Our service will commence in the Jubilee Hall as we gather for prayers and to bless our Palm Cross, before we make the small Journey round the church to carrying our Palms to symbolise the path Jesus took as he journeyed to the city

Maundy Thursday

Chrism Eucharist at Newcastle Cathedral | Thursday 17 April 11am
Come join the clergy and lay ministers of Newcastle Diocese as they renew their commitment to serve. Special oils for baptism, confirmation and healing will be blessed for use in churches and parishes in the year ahead, and the Cathedral Choir will fill the space with wonderful music.

Maundy Thursday Eucharist at St. Wilfrid Newbiggin Hall | Thursday 17 April 5.30pm
We remember Jesus' final meal with his friends, through scripture, prayer, communion, (optional) foot washing, and hymns. At the end of the service, there is the option to stay for the Watch which will last an hour.

Maundy Thursday Eucharist, Stripping of the Altar and Vigil at Holy Cross Fenham | Thursday 17 April 7pm
A symbolic service of foot washing (Maundy) followed by the commemoration of the the Last Supper that Jesus shared with the apostles. The service ends with the stripping of the that symbolises the humiliation that Jesus suffered and the emptiness of the Cross. The service concludes with a period of reflection as we gather in the Lady Chapel to reflect during the last hours Jesus spent with his father in heaven.

Communion Service with hymns, the opportunity for having a foot or hand washed (as Jesus did for his disciples at the Last Supper) and opportunity for silent prayer after the main service is finished.

Maundy Thursday Service at Holy Nativity Chapel House | Thursday 17 April 7pm
Celebrating the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, this service includes the Washing of Feet (of volunteers) and is followed by a short vigil by the Blessed Sacraments.

Maundy Thursday Service at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Thursday 17 April 7.30pm
A celebration of Jesus' final meal with his disciples. The service will be a Eucharist with foot-washing and will be followed by the stripping of the altars. Those who wish to stay are invited to a time of silent prayer from c.8.30-10pm as we watch with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Maundy Thursday Service at St. Thomas Newcastle | Thursday 17 April 7.30pm

Liturgy of Maundy Thursday at Newcastle Cathedral | Thursday 17 April 7-8.15pm
As part of the service, there will be the opportunity to participate in a foot-washing ceremony. This symbolic act, for those who walked on dusty roads in open shoes, may be best expressed these days in our washing of hands before eating. Therefore, this year, we are also offering the opportunity for a hand-washing ceremony as an alternative, drawing us into the same intimacy of the moment where Jesus knelt to wash the feet of his disciples. The service will conclude with the Watch, a time of quiet prayer and reflection, expected to end at approximately 9:30pm.

Good Friday

Easter Messy Church at Newcastle Cathedral | Friday 18 April 10.30am-12pm FREE
This Good Friday, bring the whole family along to a special craft-filled morning exploring the Easter story. This session will be packed with stories, songs and activities for little ones and their grown-ups. Recommended for ages 4-11. Booking is not required, but we encourage attendees to register in advance to ensure we have enough space and art materials for everyone.

Beginning from Westerhope Methodist Church and concluding at St John's, Whorlton - followed by refreshments.

Good Friday Procession through Haltwhistle | Friday 18 April 10am
A procession with prayers and hymns round a Cross through the town of Haltwhistle starting at the park by the hospital. Methodist, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches praying together.

Good Friday Family Worship at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Friday 18 April 10am
This morning we welcome everyone to our family worship which will be very informal and aimed to engage children and families with craft, music, refreshments and a journey through the last week of Jesus' life.

Family Fun at All Saints Gosforth | Friday 18 April 10am
Aimed especially at children, this is a family-friendly, informal service with interactive storytelling, songs & craft activities followed by hot cross buns. All are welcome!

12.30pm Hot Cross Buns and a hot beverage in the Lower Hall 1.30pm Traditional Liturgy of the day lasting approximately one hour 3.00pm the funeral bell will toll 33 times (one toll for each year of Jesus' earthly life). Church will close at 3.05pm.

Easter Sunday Parish Eucharist at St. Aidan's Brunton Park | Sunday 20 April 9.30am
In this service we celebrate Easter Day and the Risen Christ. There will be music, hymns, and singing, along with the sharing of communion. While more formal that our usual family services, this is still a lovely service for families, where there will be the chance to help decorate our cross with flowers, crafts in the community room and an Easter egg hunt in church at the end of the service.

BBC Radio 3 Live Broadcast Choral Evensong at Newcastle Cathedral | Sunday 20 April 2.45pm
End your Easter Day with a glorious, music-filled service at Newcastle Cathedral. Join us for Choral Evensong featuring uplifting compositions by Howells, Paulus, Vaughan Williams, and Lanquetuit, as we joyfully celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. This service will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s long-running Choral Evensong programme, sharing the beautiful voices of the Cathedral Choir with listeners nationwide. All are welcome to attend in person.To allow for preparations, the Cathedral will close temporarily at 12:30pm. The doors will reopen at 2:15pm to welcome the congregation. Please ensure you are seated *before* 2:45pm, as the doors will close at that time. The service will begin promptly at 3pm.
