Friendship agreement renewed with Diocese of Møre

At the end of May, a small group from our Diocese were delighted to be able to visit our Link Diocese of Møre in Norway, to renew a friendship agreement which was first established back in 2000.

The day started with morning prayer on the unique 'Train Chapel' in Rauma, a special project opened back in 2002 by the King, Queen and Bishop.

Next, the group took the gondola to the top of Romsdalseggen where discussions were held focusing on the Church’s role in society.

Afterwards, they met with representatives from local church councils at Rødven Stave Church, one of only 28 stave churches remaining in the country.

The second day started with morning prayer at Molde Cathedral, led by Dean of Newcastle, The Very Revd Lee Batson. Great discussions with Diocesan staff and the Church Music Council followed before exploring the Cathedral’s organ.

Ascension Day started with a joyful outdoor service in Frei.

The group then took a boat trip to the island of Grip where Bishop Helen-Ann and Bishop Ingeborg signed a renewed partnership with the Diocese of Møre.

An overnight stay at an Eco Camp on the island of Smøla.

A real privilege to meet May Bente Anita Jønsson, leader of the Sami church council.

Next, a visit to the Kulisteinen, one of the earliest historical markers of Christianity in the country. Part of the inscription reads, 'Twelve winters Christianity had been in Norway'.

The afternoon was spent learning about the government’s pilgrimage initiative.

A short service at Edøy Old Church followed before the group returned to Molde for the final time via the scenic coastal route, 'Atlantic Road'.

The final day in the Diocese of Møre started with a joyful confirmation service in Spjelkavik Kyrkje followed by learning more about the meaning behind their beautiful stained glass windows.

Next was a trip to The Church City Mission, 'Kirkens Bymisjon' to learn about their work with the local community and finally a trip to Ålesund church.

What a wonderful week! We look forward to our continuing friendship and continuing to learn from each other.
