Hundreds gathered at Newcastle Cathedral this weekend as the Venerable Geoff Miller was installed as Dean of Newcastle.

Geoff, 62, was previously Archdeacon of Northumberland before being appointed Dean earlier this year.

The special service took place at 4pm this Saturday, 20th October, led by the Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Reverend Christine Hardman.

Bishop Christine said: There has been great excitement since my announcement in June that Geoff is to be our next Dean. His absolute commitment to all the communities we serve and his passion for the North East and Newcastle make him the ideal person to be leading our great Cathedral.

For centuries, Newcastle Cathedral has been a place of sanctuary, hospitality, welcome and worship, and its the Mother Church for all of our Diocese. Geoffs installation is an opportunity for us all to celebrate both his appointment and the important role the Cathedral plays in daily Newcastle life.

Geoffs installation comes at an exciting time for Newcastle Cathedral as it progresses with its ambitious 6 million Common Ground in Sacred Spaceproject to transform the nave, renew visitor facilities and reshape external spaces. The work will return the Cathedral to the community hub role it has played in the city centre for centuries, and shortly it will hear whether its Round Two application to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been successful.

At the time of his appointment, Geoff said: We are on the cusp of something truly exciting here in Newcastle. Theres enormous energy and excitement as we look to the future of our wonderful Cathedral.

We strive to be bold in everything we do, and together with our city centre partners, were committed to making sure Newcastle has a cathedral to be proud of one that is diverse, visibly proud of its heritage and welcoming to everyone.
