Newcastle Cathedral holds the story of the city in its stones and monuments.
This is the only cathedral in the UK dedicated to St Nicholas and represents over 900 years of Newcastle’s development, its iconic Lantern Tower having been a guiding light for ships sailing up the River Tyne.
Interactive displays tell the stories of some of the notable characters commemorated in the Cathedral’s vast collection of ledger stones. Other highlights include spectacular stained glass, monuments to Tyneside’s industrial pioneers, and the exquisite Quire and High Altar, added in the 1880s.
Outside, a churchyard trail and landscaped terrace provide a sanctuary to unwind, pray, and learn about the Cathedral’s place in the city’s medieval quarter.
Alongside a regular pattern of worship and choral music, visitors can take part in events and activities inspired by the Cathedral’s heritage and its role in the city today.
In the name of the Sacred Trinity we, who have found in this place a home,
bid you welcome.
With the Father’s love we open wide our doors.
In the name of his Son we invite you to enter.
Empowered by the Spirit we extend our friendship.
May we welcome you as Christ himself and through God’s good grace may you see Christ in us.
Amen.
