A new memorial garden at St Matthew’s Church has been blessed and commissioned during a well-attended service led by the Revd Mark Edwards MBE.
The ceremony, assisted by Deputy Churchwarden Tom Laidler, marked the culmination of more than a year of planning. Set within the church grounds, the garden has been created as a peaceful and dignified space for remembrance and reflection.
During the service, Mark blessed both the garden and its memorial stone, offering prayers of dedication before sprinkling holy water across the site. The act symbolised the setting apart of the space for sacred use, as members of the congregation stood in quiet reflection.
The project was initiated in response to growing demand, with the church’s existing Garden of Remembrance nearing capacity. Careful preparation, including securing the necessary faculty and designing a layout in keeping with the surrounding churchyard, ensured the new space meets the needs of the parish while respecting its heritage.
Speaking at the service, Mark emphasised the importance of such spaces in church life, describing them as places that offer comfort, continuity and a connection between generations.
Church officials expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the project’s development. The new memorial garden is now open and will serve as a place of prayer, remembrance and peace for the community for years to come.
