Priest in Charge, Allendale and Whitfield

The Bishop of Newcastle wishes to appoint a Priest in Charge to the Benefice of Allendale and Whitfield and Area Dean of Hexham Deanery.

Hexham Deanery lies at the centre of Britain. It is also at the centre of a very exciting development in the life of its parishes. We are seeing significant growth in numbers called to licensed lay ministry, increased desire for collaboraration between parishes and between laity and clergy, and a growing desire to release the power of God’s love into our communities, transforming our churches and communities for the benefit of all of God’s people.

The Benefice of Allendale with Whitfield and Ninebanks is situated in South West Northumberland, 11 miles from Hexham, most of it lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But forget the sleepy image! These are dynamic, lively, diverse and active communities consisting of local people belonging to families who have been here for generations as well as a growing incoming population. They espouse a strong desire to grow in depth of spirituality and missional engagement. There are strong links with the schools and the large number of community organisations.

We are looking for a priest who has well-developed leadership abilities together with strong collaborative skills to help develop vocation, discipleship and ministry across the deanery. There is significant energy in both deanery and benefice for responding to the contemporary challenges that the church faces within the rural context. We are therefore looking for someone with a robust vision for the rural church who can enable both lay and ordained to fulfil their potential to engage in God’s mission locally. The role of priest in charge is combined with that of Area Dean and we seek someone who will significantly engage in lay development on a deanery wide basis. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with parish experience who is looking to extend and develop their leadership in a broader context that is both challenging and exciting.
